Former infrastructure minister Jone Usamate has recognized his accountability for the delays affecting the $2.6 million water reservoir project at Rara Housing in Lajonia, Labasa. Usamate conveyed his understanding that both current and past ministers must be responsible for the projects under their jurisdictions, stating, “We are held accountable for what we do and what we fail to deliver, both during our time in office and even now.”

Usamate explained that although the reservoir itself was completed last year, complications arose with connecting water mains required to supply water into the reservoir. He pointed out that the current delay in functionality stems from unresolved work on the mains running from Benau, which are essential for providing water services to the Tenia community. “For a reservoir to function properly, you need the mains that bring water into it,” he emphasized.

Echoing sentiments from his previous critiques, Usamate’s call for accountability aligns with recent comments made by Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad, who also noted troubling trends in the execution of government-funded projects, citing delays and incomplete work in various infrastructure initiatives. Similar to Usamate’s concerns, Prasad has expressed that many projects have suffered from mismanagement, highlighting the necessity for better planning and oversight in future initiatives to ensure that resources are used effectively and public trust is maintained.

As both Usamate and Prasad advocate for reforms in project execution, the emphasis on accountability serves as a potential catalyst for future improvements in Fiji’s infrastructure and community services. The hope is that by addressing past mistakes and committing to strategic planning and proper project management, the upcoming year could see tangible benefits for communities awaiting reliable water supply and enhanced living standards.

This situation presents an opportunity for fostering a renewed commitment to better governance, shedding light on the importance of learning from mistakes to enhance public services.
