Water Crisis Looms Over Cikobia Island: Will Help Arrive in Time?

Village elders on Cikobia Island are warning that two villages could soon run out of water if the water cartage service does not arrive this week. The elders from Nautovatu and Nalele expressed concern as their primary water source dwindles to critical levels.

Jo Wasasala, a representative from Cikobia, reported that the water levels have dropped alarmingly low and emphasized the urgent need for government intervention. He mentioned a meeting with the divisional officer to discuss the situation, particularly stressing the pressing need for water at the nursing station on the island.

In the event conditions worsen, Wasasala noted that young people from the affected villages might have to be relocated to another village with better water supply. He stated that the priority would be given to the elderly, women, and disabled individuals.

Wasasala added that both immediate relief and long-term solutions are essential to ensure a sustainable water supply, highlighting that this has been a persistent issue for the government.

Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural, Maritime Development, and Disaster Management, confirmed they are aware of the water issues on Cikobia Island and are actively working to resolve them.
