Residents in select areas of Labasa are currently experiencing water shortages, prompting concerns among the community. While the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has not issued a new statement addressing the issue, they had previously advised customers to stockpile sufficient water to last for at least two to three days due to declining levels in various water sources within the Northern Division.
The water systems in Vunika and Wainikoro are particularly affected, operating under critical conditions and facing the potential need for rationing if improvements are not observed. Additionally, the Nasalasala water system is also nearing its critical threshold. In the event of escalating conditions, WAF has mentioned the possibility of implementing water carting services to assist impacted communities.
Residents are urged to conserve water diligently and prepare for ongoing difficulties. Similar water supply challenges have been reported in Fiji’s Central and Eastern Divisions, where heavy rainfall has disrupted operations, leading to intermittent water availability for over 300,000 affected individuals.
WAF has made customer service lines accessible for inquiries and support during this period. Community resilience plays a vital role in overcoming these hardships, and by promoting proactive conservation measures, residents can foster hope for the stabilization of water supplies in the near future. Collaboration and preparedness will be key in navigating these challenges effectively.
For additional assistance, residents can reach WAF at 3346777 or mobile number 5777, and via email at contact@waf.com.fj.
