The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) will soon welcome a new chief executive officer as Dr. Amit Chanan has opted not to renew his contract, which is set to conclude in March 2025. Dr. Chanan communicated his decision to the WAF Board, expressing a desire to explore new opportunities.

WAF Chairman Ratu Savenaca Seniloli acknowledged Dr. Chanan’s substantial contributions throughout his leadership. Under his tenure, the successful completion of the Viria Water Treatment Plant was achieved, marking it as one of the largest water infrastructure projects in the South Pacific. Additionally, Dr. Chanan played a pivotal role in formulating the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, which outlines an ambitious $8.5 billion investment plan aimed at ensuring sustainable water and sanitation services for all citizens of Fiji over the next three decades.

Chairman Seniloli emphasized the board’s respect for Dr. Chanan’s decision, noting that leadership changes often bring fresh perspectives and innovation to organizations. This transition could pave the way for new leadership at WAF to continue evolving, with the potential to introduce innovative strategies that further enhance water services, thus ensuring the wellness of the community for generations to come.

Dr. Chanan’s legacy, coupled with the strategic vision laid out in the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, positions the authority to effectively address future water and sanitation challenges in Fiji. His departure opens the door for a new chapter in WAF’s mission, highlighting a hopeful future for the water and sanitation services critical to the nation’s wellbeing.

Overall, while Dr. Chanan’s leadership will be missed, the foundation he established will serve as a stepping stone for ongoing development and improvement in Fiji’s water services.
