The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging local traders to refrain from exploiting the festive season for profit. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized the organization’s commitment to cracking down on practices such as price gouging, misleading promotions, and unfair trade behaviors.
“We must work together to promote fairness and ensure that the spirit of the season is not tainted by unethical practices,” Abraham stated. In preparation for the Christmas shopping season, the FCCC has ramped up its efforts to conduct inspections and surveys throughout the country.
In November alone, the FCCC completed over 700 inspections with a focus on identifying and preventing instances of price gouging and deceptive conduct. This vigilance led to the discovery of 44 potential violations, including instances of overpricing and failure to show prices or reflect reductions in duty and VAT.
Going forward, the FCCC plans to implement appropriate enforcement actions against identified breaches. This may involve issuing warning letters, placing businesses under surveillance, or pursuing prosecution when necessary. So far this month, the FCCC has already conducted 417 pre-Christmas inspections to ensure traders comply with fair trading practices as the holiday rush approaches.
Additionally, Abraham reminded the public that the holiday season is also an opportunity to promote kindness and strengthen community bonds. He encouraged individuals to reach out to vulnerable members of the community, such as elderly neighbors or those spending the holidays alone. “A simple act of kindness, like sharing a meal or offering companionship, can truly make a positive difference,” he added.
This message not only highlights the importance of consumer protection but also encourages a sense of community and compassion during a time typically associated with giving and togetherness.
In summary, the FCCC is dedicated to maintaining fair trading and protecting consumers during the festive season while also promoting a spirit of goodwill towards others. Their proactive approach ensures that everyone can enjoy a fair and safe shopping experience.
