Residents in Vunuku Village, Rewa, are currently facing significant challenges with waste disposal, a situation articulated by village headman Vilikesa Koroi at the launch of the Home Equals campaign organized by the Ministry of Lands. Mr. Koroi highlighted that traditional waste disposal methods have become increasingly difficult due to the presence of groundwater, complicating efforts to bury refuse. As a result, villagers have taken to burning their waste, a practice that raises further environmental and health concerns.
In expressing his frustration over the absence of adequate waste management solutions, Mr. Koroi noted the village’s ongoing struggle to find a viable resolution. Nonetheless, he reassured community members that they are working closely with the Ministry of Health, which is monitoring their waste disposal practices and providing guidance. Village leaders are also planning to discuss a collaborative approach to utilizing the Nasali waste disposal facility, which is an agreed-upon solution among various villages in Rewa Province.
This situation in Vunuku Village is representative of wider challenges faced throughout Fiji, where a shift in attitudes towards waste disposal and inadequate facilities have become increasingly problematic. Former Speaker of the House Pita Nacuva has previously highlighted the necessity of communal responsibility in maintaining cleanliness and managing waste effectively.
At a national level, additional solutions are being investigated, as all landfill sites in Fiji are currently operating at full capacity. The government is exploring innovative ideas, such as waste-to-energy facilities, to address these urgent waste management issues. Minister Maciu Nalumisa underscored the importance of effective waste management, which is pivotal for environmental protection and public health.
While these waste management challenges may appear daunting, the proactive collaboration among village leaders, the Ministry of Health, and government entities presents a hopeful trajectory toward sustainable waste management practices. By fostering community engagement and education, there exists a potential to enhance waste disposal systems, promote environmental stewardship, and protect the natural beauty of Fiji for future generations. The residents of Vunuku Village and their counterparts can contribute toward achieving a cleaner and healthier environment through responsible waste management practices.
