The residents of Vunuku Village in Rewa are currently grappling with significant waste disposal challenges, as highlighted by village headman Vilikesa Koroi. During the launch of the Home Equals campaign, organized by the Ministry of Lands, Mr. Koroi revealed that traditional methods of waste disposal have become increasingly problematic due to the presence of groundwater, making it difficult to bury rubbish. As a result, the villagers have resorted to burning their waste, which poses further environmental concerns.
Mr. Koroi expressed his frustration with the lack of proper waste management solutions, acknowledging the village’s extended struggle to find a viable solution. However, he emphasized that they are actively collaborating with the Ministry of Health, which is monitoring their practices and offering guidance. The village leaders also plan to discuss a collective approach to using the Nasali waste disposal facility, which has been agreed upon by various villages within Rewa Province.
This ongoing issue of waste management in Vunuku Village is reflective of broader concerns across Fiji, where changing attitudes toward waste disposal and inadequate facilities are increasingly problematic.
