Waste Disposal Dilemma: Are We Doing Enough?

Suva City Council CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa has praised the community’s efforts in addressing waste disposal issues in Suva. Many residents recognize the significance of tackling this challenge. Unfortunately, numerous individuals continue to improperly dispose of waste, showing a lack of regard for the environmental consequences of their actions. This careless behavior reflects a broader issue of disregard for cleanliness and responsibility.

Boseiwaqa highlighted that waste disposal remains a significant problem in Suva, with the council having issued over 20 littering notices already. He pointed out specific areas that require attention. Collaboration among stakeholders is essential in raising awareness about proper waste management.

The council is currently partnering with the Housing Authority, Public Rental Board, and community members to promote environmental protection and proper waste disposal. Engaging citizens, local councils, and the government is critical to the success of this initiative.

Despite some thinking this issue is minor, proper waste disposal is crucial for any community’s health. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, municipal solid waste generation is expected to rise from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050. In 2020, the direct global cost of waste management was approximately $252 billion, but when considering hidden costs associated with pollution and health issues caused by inadequate waste disposal, the expenses can soar to $361 billion. Without immediate action, this cost may nearly double to about $640.3 billion by 2050.

Waste generation is closely linked to GDP, and many rapidly growing economies face challenges from increasing waste levels. The UNEP’s Global Waste Management Outlook aims to offer actionable strategies for achieving a more sustainable future, emphasizing the role of public and private sector decision-makers in moving towards zero waste.

Fijians are encouraged to participate actively in waste management efforts by properly disposing of everyday items such as empty beverage containers, snack wrappers, and other waste. This ongoing issue requires urgent attention and collective responsibility for a cleaner environment.
