Residents of Bayview Heights in Suva have expressed their frustration over the lingering piles of rubbish along the roadside, citing unpleasant odors and unhygienic conditions.

Local resident Jotame Baleiwai voiced concerns regarding the council’s failure to adhere to its rubbish collection schedule, highlighting that while the SCC has managed to pick up regular kitchen waste, larger accumulations of rubbish have remained untouched for several days. Another resident, Losana Raikibeqa, reported that the overflowing garbage is having a detrimental impact on the health of her family, claiming that the offensive smell attracts various pests and exacerbates illness.

As a measure to alleviate the problem, the SCC has engaged additional garbage trucks, which incurs significant costs, amounting to about $2,000 per day for multiple collections.
