Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) play a critical role in preventing the spread of infections in healthcare settings. This assertion was made by Suranga De Silva, a WASH Specialist at UNICEF, who emphasized that although WASH does not directly eliminate pathogens, it is essential for infection prevention.

In healthcare facilities, the traditional WASH framework encompasses water, sanitation, and hygiene; however, there are two additional crucial components that must be included: healthcare waste management and environmental cleaning. De Silva pointed out the pressing need for these elements, particularly in sensitive areas such as labor rooms where using untreated water poses significant health risks. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that water used for handwashing and bathing meets drinking quality standards, meaning it should be free of pathogens and harmful chemicals.

De Silva also stressed that effective WASH systems must extend beyond mere infrastructure improvements—like ensuring the availability of toilets and water tanks. Creating an enabling environment requires appropriate policy frameworks, necessary training, and resource allocation to ensure a comprehensive approach to healthcare sanitation.

The challenges associated with WASH systems are echoed in similar contexts, such as in Fiji, where only 17% of urban residents are connected to sewered sanitation systems, as highlighted during recent engagements by local health leaders. Collaborative efforts among health ministries and organizations are actively working to improve sanitation facilities, particularly in underserved areas, showing a community-focused approach to overcoming public health challenges.

The ongoing commitment to enhance data collection and sanitation infrastructure reflects a hopeful trend toward better health outcomes for vulnerable populations in the region. Efforts to strengthen these frameworks are crucial not only for disease prevention but also for promoting the overall well-being of communities, creating a healthier future for all.
