Wasasala’s Redemption: Labasa Triumphs in Thrilling Championship Final

Veteran striker Christopher Wasasala once again played a crucial role for the Labasa football team, securing a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Navua in the FMF Inter District Championship grand final held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park last night.

In an interview, Wasasala expressed his determination to succeed with the decisive penalty kick, aiming to redeem himself after missing a penalty in the semi-final match. “I was convinced it was going in, wanting to restore my reputation,” he stated. He emphasized the resilience of the team, acknowledging the challenges they faced, and declared that he would take the fifth kick to clinch the win for Labasa, dedicating the victory to their fans.

Labasa’s goals during the match were also contributed by players Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi, and Lekima Gonerau. For Navua, goals came from Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala, and Jared Rongosulia, although Vineet Chand’s attempt missed the target.

Labasa coach Ravneel Pratap shared his pride in the team’s performance, attributing their success to district pride and the unwavering support from fans and sponsors. He acknowledged the challenges of the season but noted the importance of community backing, particularly praising Extra Supermarket for their support.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Pratap highlighted their comeback from a 3-0 defeat against Navua in the group stage to victory in the final. He commended Navua as a strong opponent, stating they provided a formidable challenge.

Labasa, also known as the Babasiga Lions, was led by 42-year-old goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau. The team is set to return home today with a prize of $25,000, while Navua will receive $6,000. In a tense second half, Labasa midfielder Akeimi Ralulu and Navua’s Saimoni Damuni both received red cards, resulting in both teams finishing with ten players.
