Veteran striker Christopher Wasasala played a crucial role in Labasa’s victory, helping the team secure a 5-3 win in a dramatic penalty shootout against Navua in the FMF Inter District Championship final at Lautoka’s Churchill Park. After the match, Wasasala expressed his determination to succeed and redeem himself after missing a penalty in the semi-finals.
“I was confident that I would score this time as I wanted to restore my reputation,” he revealed. “Our team faced many challenges, but we needed to remain strong for the final. I told the boys I would take the fifth penalty to clinch the win for us. This victory is for all the Labasa fans.”
Labasa’s goals were contributed by Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi, and Lekima Gonerau. For Navua, the goals came from Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala, and Jared Rongosulia, with Vineet Chand missing his attempt.
An emotional Labasa coach Ravneel Pratap credited the district’s pride for their perseverance throughout a tough season. He highlighted the unwavering support from fans, sponsors, and officials, particularly thanking Extra Supermarket for their assistance. Pratap reflected on their remarkable comeback after a 3-0 loss to Navua in the group stage, recognizing the strength of Navua as worthy opponents.
The Labasa team, known as the Babasiga Lions and led by 42-year-old captain Simione Tamanisau, will return home with a $25,000 prize, while Navua will take home $6,000. The match saw Labasa midfielder Akeimi Ralulu and Navua’s Saimoni Damuni dismissed with red cards in the second half, leaving both teams with ten players.
