Veteran striker Christopher Wasasala played a pivotal role in leading the Labasa football team to victory in the FMF Inter District Championship final, overcoming Navua in a tense penalty shootout that ended 5-3 at Lautoka’s Churchill Park last night.
In an interview, Wasasala expressed his determination to succeed in the crucial moment, especially after missing a penalty in the semi-finals. “I was resolute that my penalty would go in, aiming to salvage my reputation,” he shared. He highlighted the challenges faced by the team and expressed pride in being the fifth kicker to secure the win, dedicating the victory to Labasa fans.
Labasa’s goals during the match came from Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi, and Lekima Gonerau. For Navua, Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala, and Jared Rongosulia found the net, although Vineet Chand’s attempt unfortunately missed.
Labasa’s coach, Ravneel Pratap, noted the importance of district pride as a motivating force for the team. He acknowledged the support from fans, sponsors, and officials throughout the tough season, particularly praising Extra Supermarket for their consistent backing.
Pratap remarked on the team’s resilience, celebrating their comeback after previously losing 3-0 to Navua in a group match. He recognized Navua as a formidable opponent that provided a strong challenge.
Known as the Babasiga Lions, Labasa was led by their 42-year-old goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau. The team is set to return home today with a prize of $25,000, while Navua will receive $6,000. The match saw both teams reduced to ten players after Labasa’s Akeimi Ralulu and Navua’s Saimoni Damuni were shown red cards in the second half.
