Veteran striker Christopher Wasasala played a pivotal role in Labasa’s victory, leading his team to a 5-3 penalty shootout win over Navua in the FMF Inter District Championship final held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park last night.
In an interview, Wasasala expressed his determination to convert the crucial penalty and to silence his critics, acknowledging his previous penalty miss in the semi-finals. He stated, “I was certain it would go in, as I aimed to restore my reputation.”
The team faced numerous challenges throughout the season, but Wasasala assured his teammates of victory by volunteering to be the fifth kicker. He dedicated the win to Labasa’s passionate supporters.
Labasa’s goals during regulation were scored by Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi, and Lekima Gonerau. Navua’s scoring came from Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala, and Jared Rongosulia, while an attempt by Vineet Chand was off-target.
Emotional from the victory, Labasa coach Ravneel Pratap credited the district’s pride and the unwavering support from fans, sponsors, and officials for their success. He noted the backing from their sponsor, Extra Supermarket, which ensured the team had everything they needed.
Pratap also highlighted their remarkable comeback, recovering from a previous 3-0 defeat to Navua in the group stage to claim the championship. He praised Navua as a formidable opponent.
Labasa, known as the Babasiga Lions and captained by 42-year-old goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau, takes home $25,000 in prize money, while Navua receives $6,000. The match saw Labasa’s Akeimi Ralulu and Navua’s Saimoni Damuni both receiving red cards in the second half, leaving both teams with ten players on the field.
