Wasasala Shines as Labasa Claims FMF Championship Glory

Veteran striker Christopher Wasasala once again proved his worth for the Labasa football team, helping them secure a dramatic 5-3 victory in a penalty shootout against Navua during the FMF Inter District Championship final held last night at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

In an interview, Wasasala expressed his determination to succeed when taking the vital penalty kick, aiming to silence critics after previously missing a penalty in the semi-finals. “I was confident that it was going in, as I wanted to restore my reputation,” he shared. He emphasized the importance of mental strength, stating, “I told the boys that I would be the fifth kicker and I would win it for us. I dedicate this win to all Labasa fans out there.”

Other goals for Labasa were scored by Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi, and Lekima Gonerau. Navua’s goals came from Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala, and Jared Rongosulia, though Vineet Chand’s attempt missed the target.

Labasa’s emotional coach, Ravneel Pratap, attributed their success to district pride and the unwavering support of their fans, sponsors, and officials. He highlighted the critical role of their sponsor, Extra Supermarket, in providing necessary resources throughout the season. Pratap noted the significance of the win, reflecting on their comeback from a previous 3-0 defeat to Navua in the group stage, and acknowledged Navua as a formidable opponent.

Labasa, known as the Babasiga Lions and led by 42-year-old goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau, will return home today with a prize money of $25,000, while Navua receives $6,000. The match saw both teams reduced to ten men in the second half after Labasa midfielder Akeimi Ralulu and Saimoni Damuni of Navua were shown red cards.
