Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his delayed response in dismissing Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru amid serious allegations involving the Fiji Sports Council. The Prime Minister’s decision to terminate Saukuru was announced, citing concerns about potential misuse of public office and to facilitate a thorough investigation by the Fiji Police Force.

In his statement, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the importance of integrity and the responsible management of public resources, underscoring the government’s expectations from all public officials. However, Ms. Kumar argued that the timing of the Prime Minister’s action appears questionable, especially since an independent investigation by the Fiji Sports Council is already ongoing.

Kumar expressed that the Prime Minister’s intervention seems more focused on controlling the damage rather than demonstrating strong leadership. “Stepping in now to take over the Youth and Sports portfolio appears less like leadership and more like damage control,” she remarked. Furthermore, she pointed out a troubling trend of delayed decision-making that she believes erodes public confidence in Mr. Rabuka’s leadership capabilities.

The political discourse surrounding this situation highlights the importance of timely and decisive leadership, particularly in matters affecting public trust and governance. As this issue develops, the outcome of the Fiji Sports Council’s investigation may offer more clarity and potentially restore confidence in the country’s leadership.
