The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Nasinu constituency for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), after he failed to attend his scheduled hearing. Komaisavai, aged 52, faces charges related to causing harm through electronic communication.

The charges stem from an incident on February 10, 2021, in which Komaisavai allegedly made threats on Facebook against then-Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, suggesting he should be killed. During the court proceedings, prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that while all witnesses were present, the accused did not show up. The prosecution requested that the trial continue in Komaisavai’s absence, which the court approved.

Notably, Sayed-Khaiyum was among the witnesses called to testify against Komaisavai. The case has been adjourned until December 17, when a judgment is expected to be delivered.

This situation highlights the ongoing concerns about public discourse on social media and the responsibilities that come with free speech. It illustrates the court’s commitment to addressing such matters seriously while ensuring that all parties involved have the opportunity to present their cases. As the case unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in public communication.
