Police are still searching for one of two men accused of robbing a 57-year-old woman and her disabled son. Mosese Vuniwai and Jashneel Pillay have been charged with aggravated robbery in connection with an incident that allegedly took place on January 22 of last year.
The two men, along with a third accomplice who has already pleaded guilty and been sentenced, reportedly entered the victims’ bedroom while they were asleep around midnight. One of the suspects is accused of covering the woman’s mouth and holding a cane knife to her neck as she attempted to call for help, while the other two ransacked the home.
The suspects attempted to escape in a getaway vehicle but were apprehended by police. Vuniwai appeared before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu for a judgment hearing, but the ruling was not yet ready. Meanwhile, a bench warrant for Pillay has been extended as his location remains unknown. DPP lawyer Pooja Mishra stated that the state is working closely with law enforcement to locate Pillay.
The case has been rescheduled for November 25. The third co-accused, Joseva Tuidama, pleaded guilty and received a sentence of five years and four months, with a non-parole period of four years on November 10 of last year.
