Warning: Unsafe Dental Practices on the Rise in Fiji

Spread the love

The Consumer Council of Fiji is alerting the public about the dangers posed by unregulated dental procedures being carried out by untrained individuals, which could lead to significant health risks. CEO Seema Shandil pointed out that, although no formal complaints have been submitted, investigations have revealed that some traders are providing dental jewellery applications for as little as $5 at market stalls.

Shandil stressed that these informal procedures are unsafe and could involve harmful materials and adhesives. She warned that such practices may expose individuals to serious health issues, including infectious diseases and toxic reactions, potentially resulting in long-term complications.

Consumers are strongly advised to avoid these dangerous procedures, as they could have life-threatening consequences. For those who have encountered problems or have concerns, the Council encourages them to report incidents to the National Consumer Helpline at 155. Complaints will be forwarded to the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for investigation and appropriate action.

In a stern warning to traders engaging in these unsafe practices, Shandil declared that they are jeopardizing public health and safety, urging them to cease their activities immediately. The Consumer Council remains dedicated to protecting consumer rights and ensuring public health through active monitoring and enforcement.

This issue highlights the importance of awareness regarding consumer safety in healthcare practices and the necessity of seeking qualified professionals for medical and dental procedures. By bringing attention to these dangerous practices, the Consumer Council encourages responsible consumer behavior, which ultimately aims to safeguard the community’s health and well-being.
