After a challenging 2024 season, the NSW Waratahs are gearing up for a fresh start under the guidance of new coach Dan McKellar. The squad has seen significant changes, most notably the addition of powerhouse Wallabies players such as Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Andrew Kellaway, Taniela Tupou, Rob Leota, Isaac Kailea, and Darby Lancaster.
Last season was less than ideal for the Waratahs, who finished at the bottom of the league, securing only two wins out of 14 matches. A major contributing factor to this disappointing performance was a serious injury crisis in the front row, notably the absence of Wallaby Angus Bell for a considerable part of the season.
However, optimism abounds for the new season as the Waratahs have made significant signings, particularly in bringing in Suaalii, who made an impressive debut for the Wallabies in their recent victory over England. His standout performance earned him the Player of the Match award, marking an exceptional entry into professional rugby union. He joins a talented roster of Wallabies, which includes regular starters like Tupou and Kellaway, as well as emerging talents Kailea and Lancaster.
Rob Leota, who has a strong personal connection to Sydney, expressed his excitement about joining the Waratahs, highlighting the supportive environment among teammates and his family presence in the area, which has helped ease his transition.
Despite the influx of talent, the Waratahs have also seen some notable departures, including Mark Nawaqanitawase to the NRL and Dylan Pietsch to the Western Force, along with Lachlan Swinton moving to the Top 14 in France.
Overall, this rebuilding phase presents a renewed opportunity for the Waratahs to rise from last season’s struggles, infused with new talent and a fresh approach that holds promise for a more competitive 2025 season. The combination of established Wallabies and emerging stars may just pave the path toward a turnaround for the club.
