A simple act of camaraderie during a rugby tournament has led to an unforgettable moment for 19-year-old Viliame Waqalevu. The aspiring athlete, who is representing the Dominion Brothers under-21 team at the 17th Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament at Ganilau Park, showcased not just his skills but also a generous spirit.
Waqalevu recently experienced the thrill of competing in his first Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s, describing it as an invaluable opportunity that tests his mettle against formidable opponents. He emphasized the importance of such competitions in enhancing his skills and personal growth.
The young rugby player’s compassionate nature was highlighted when he shared his rugby boot with a fellow competitor from another team, an act that quickly gained attention online on February 5. “I’ve known him since our YMCA days, that’s why we’re so close,” Waqalevu shared, recalling their bond formed through shared experiences like bus rides, meals, and even clothing.
This heartwarming gesture of kindness did not go unnoticed. Just a day later, renowned sports photographer Pita Simpson gifted Waqalevu a brand new pair of size nine rugby boots, ensuring he could continue participating in the tournament without any concerns.
Waqalevu’s rugby journey began at an early age, playing kaji rugby before advancing through the ranks at Nasinu Secondary School. He has had notable experiences, including participation in the Deans final.
As the eldest of six siblings, Waqalevu credits his humble upbringing for shaping his character and instilling solid values. He appreciates his family’s unwavering support, with a mother who teaches and a father who works as a farmer. Their encouragement has played a significant role in his pursuit of rugby, enabling him to thrive as both an athlete and a person.
Waqalevu’s story serves as a reminder of the impactful role generosity and teamwork play both on and off the field, illustrating the spirit of community that defines the sport of rugby in Fiji.
