The Wallaroos secured a 33-26 victory against South Africa, positioning themselves to contend for the WXV 2 title against Scotland in Cape Town. Early in the match, Jo Yapp’s team took control, building a substantial 21-5 lead within the first 15 minutes.
Despite having opportunities to further increase their advantage before halftime, the Wallaroos faced setbacks due to errors and a formidable South African team that kept the match competitive. Key tries from Maya Stewart and Desiree Miller appeared to put the game out of reach, but South Africa mounted a late resurgence.
In a tense conclusion, South Africa scored two late tries, bringing the match to a nail-biting climax. Ultimately, Ash Marsters emerged as the standout player, making a crucial defensive play just on the line, and achieving a milestone by matching the record for most caps held by an Australian.
As a result of this win, Australia now leads the WXV 2 standings and will meet Scotland, currently in second place, next Sunday in the final round to determine the champion.
The match began at a fast pace, reminiscent of how the Wallaroos performed against Wales in their previous game. “The atmosphere was incredible… we always anticipated that the Springboks would challenge us vigorously. They are a very physical team and certainly did not disappoint. They pushed us for the entire 80 minutes, which was tough,” Coach Jo Yapp reflected after the match.
Yapp noted that the team had opportunities in the first half and managed to circulate the ball effectively, but the disallowed tries due to grounding errors allowed South Africa to remain in contention. “We are really proud of the effort to rebound and secure the win. The commitment they showed for one another made a significant impact, and that’s not something easily coached; it comes from a collective desire to work hard for each other, which was truly rewarding to see.”
