Wallabies Set for Argentina Clash with Return of Key Players

Fijian winger Marika Koroibete and flanker Rob Valetini have been named to start for the Wallabies in their match against Argentina in Buenos Aires this Sunday morning. Both players are expected to strengthen the team as they seek to recover from consecutive losses to South Africa.

Another Fijian, Langi Gleeson, is included in the reserves. Coach Joe Schmidt has appointed backrower Harry Wilson as captain, making him the 90th player to lead the Australian team. This decision comes as Taniela Tupou returns to the starting lineup after missing the two Tests against South Africa.

Joining Tupou in the squad are returning hooker Matt Faessler and Angus Bell. Nick Frost has also recovered from a concussion to partner with Lukhan Salakaia-Loto in the second row.

In the backs, Hamish Stewart from the Western Force will earn his first cap as Wallaby number 986, after a long journey through over 100 Super Rugby matches for the Force and Queensland Reds. The backline also sees the return of NSW Waratahs captain and scrumhalf Jake Gordon, who will team up with Noah Lolesio after recovering from injury.

The bench features experienced player Allan Alaalatoa alongside Josh Nasser and Isaac Kailea. James Slipper will have to wait another week to match George Gregan’s record of 139 Wallabies caps, which may happen in the upcoming Bledisloe Cup series. Jeremy Williams and Gleeson have also bounced back from injury and will provide additional forward cover, while Tate McDermott, Ben Donaldson, and Max Jorgensen maintain their positions to complete the 23-player squad.

Schmidt expressed confidence in the team, noting, “The players have bounced back from the travel and time difference since arriving in Buenos Aires, with today’s training being our most energetic.” He acknowledged the strong support for the Argentine team while also appreciating the encouragement received from Australia.

The match is set to kick off at 10 am Fiji Time.
