Walk for Change: Community Rallies to Support Education in Fiji

Avenai Serutabua, a dedicated youth advocate, is mobilizing his community to support education by organizing a 25-kilometer walk-a-thon to raise $3,000 for the Burenitu Village School kindergarten. Scheduled for next Saturday, this event comes in response to concerns expressed by parents during his recent visit to the school in Nabukelevu Village, highlighting the pressing need for educational resources.

Serutabua noted that the village, which has a population of over 500, faces economic challenges, with many families relying on yaqona and root crop farming for income. This will be his third walk-a-thon; previously, he raised funds for those impacted by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020 and for school stationery in 2022.

“The walk-a-thon is a crucial step towards providing modern and quality education to students at Burenitu Village Kindergarten,” Serutabua stated. He emphasized the importance of community support in making a significant difference in the lives of children. The funds raised will help equip the kindergarten with essential teaching aids, including school charts, a television, Wi-Fi access, carpets, books, art supplies, cleaning materials, whiteboards, and paints.

A heartfelt acknowledgment was made to Jacks of Fiji for their generous donation towards the initiative. Serutabua expressed his enthusiasm for engaging with fellow youths and community members who share his vision for enhancing local education. He extended an invitation to individuals from surrounding villages—Matakaidawa, Naboutini, Navutulevu, and Namatakula—to join the “Walk with a Purpose” project.

Similar to past efforts demonstrated in other communities, such as the villagers of Nadovu who united to construct a bridge for students facing dangerous journeys to school, Serutabua’s endeavor reflects the power of community engagement in addressing educational challenges. By participating in this walk-a-thon, community members have the opportunity to actively contribute to the welfare of children, fostering a supportive environment that recognizes education as a foundational pillar for future success.

Efforts like these showcase the ability of local communities to inspire change and create a positive impact on educational resources, illustrating a hopeful future for the children of Fiji.
