Walesi Fiji received a substantial sum of $123.6 million in government funding between 2015 and 2022, yet a recent audit revealed significant concerns about the company’s financial management. The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, shared these findings in Parliament, highlighting that despite the hefty investment, Walesi has struggled to establish a self-sustaining revenue model and remains heavily dependent on government support.
During the audited period, Walesi reportedly spent $70 million on equipment. However, the audit uncovered that ten payments totaling $9.3 million lacked proper documentation, raising questions about whether those expenditures adhered to legal obligations and the intended purpose of the funds. Furthermore, the absence of a project closure report has hindered the ability to accurately assess project costs against the original budget.
The audit’s analysis suggested that at least $80 million, about 68 percent of the total spending, could be viewed as waste.
