The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is anticipated to receive a report this week from the Office of the Auditor-General concerning the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited. This announcement was made during Mr. Kamikamica’s visit to Labasa, where he addressed concerns about the state-owned digital television platform.

The investigation, which began last year, focuses on allegations of overspending and irregularities in Walesi’s operations. Mr. Kamikamica acknowledged the concerns raised and stated that any necessary information would be reported to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The inquiry was launched to assess whether proper financial management procedures were upheld, including the allocation of funds, compliance with tender processes, and vendor selection, since Walesi’s inception in 2015. In a previous parliamentary session, the Minister disclosed that around $125 million had been invested in the establishment of Walesi under the previous government.

The forthcoming auditor-general’s report is expected to shed light on the appropriateness and justification of these expenditures, ultimately aiming to improve transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.

This situation presents an opportunity for important reforms within the operations of Walesi, potentially paving the way for a more efficient and accountable use of funds in the future. With the ongoing scrutiny, there is hope that positive changes will emerge, ensuring that digital services provided to the public are both high-quality and responsibly managed.

Summary: Minister Manoa Kamikamica will receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report on the investigation of Walesi Pte Limited this week, focusing on allegations of overspending and operational irregularities since its establishment in 2015. The report aims to enhance transparency and accountability within the company, potentially leading to significant reforms in the management of public funds.
