The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is poised to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report this week on the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited. During his recent visit to Labasa, he addressed growing concerns regarding the state-owned digital television platform, which has been under scrutiny.

The investigation began last year and focuses on allegations concerning excessive spending and operational irregularities within Walesi. Minister Kamikamica emphasized his commitment to transparency, stating that any findings warranting action would be reported to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The inquiry aims to assess whether proper financial management protocols were followed in various areas, including fund allocation, adherence to tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement activities since the establishment of Walesi in 2015. Last year, Kamikamica mentioned that around $125 million was expended on the creation of Walesi under the previous administration.

The anticipated findings from the Auditor-General’s report are expected to shed light on whether these financial outlays were justified and managed correctly, offering the possibility of greater accountability and governance in public financial management.

As this situation develops, it promises not only to clarify past operations but also to strengthen the foundation for future oversight and integrity in government projects, potentially restoring public trust. The commitment to addressing concerns showcases a proactive approach by the government to ensure accountability.

This investigation highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance transparency in public expenditures, which is vital for fostering confidence in government initiatives.
