The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is poised to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report this week, concerning the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited, the state-owned digital television platform. This disclosure came during Mr. Kamikamica’s visit to Labasa, where he addressed concerns regarding Walesi’s operational status.

Initiated last year, the investigation focuses on allegations of significant overspending and operational irregularities at Walesi. Mr. Kamikamica acknowledged the concerns raised and emphasized his commitment to reporting any findings to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption if necessary.

Last year, the minister had announced the inquiry to assess whether proper financial management processes were adhered to. This inquiry encompasses the investigation of fund allocation, compliance with tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement activities since Walesi was established in 2015. In a previous parliamentary session, the minister noted that an estimated $125 million had been spent on the platform during the tenure of the prior government.

The findings from the Auditor-General’s report are anticipated to shed light on the justification and management of these expenditures, offering clarity on the future operations of Walesi.

This ongoing investigation highlights a proactive approach by the government to ensure transparency and accountability in public spending. It reflects a commitment to uphold ethical standards in government operations, which is crucial for maintaining public trust. The anticipated report may pave the way for improvements within Walesi and reinforce the government’s aim to enhance the integrity of state-owned enterprises.
