The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is anticipated to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report regarding the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited this week. During his visit to Labasa, he addressed the public’s concerns over the state-owned digital television platform, which has been under scrutiny.

The investigation, which began last year, focuses on allegations surrounding excessive expenditures and irregularities in Walesi’s operations. Minister Kamikamica assured the public that any findings would be reported to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption if necessary. He previously announced the inquiry to assess whether proper procedures were followed in managing the platform’s finances, which encompasses examining fund allocations, tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement practices since Walesi’s inception in 2015.

During a parliamentary session, he revealed that around $125 million was spent on establishing Walesi under the previous government. The results of the auditor-general’s report are expected to shed light on the legitimacy and management of these expenses.

This investigation underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, which is essential for restoring public trust in state-owned enterprises. As the report is released, there is hope that it will pave the way for corrective actions, improved governance, and enhanced operational efficiency at Walesi. This may lead to a stronger foundation for the digital television platform and better service for the citizens it aims to serve.
