The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is anticipated to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report regarding the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited this week. This disclosure was made during his visit to Labasa, where he addressed public concerns about the state-owned digital television platform.
The investigation began last year in response to allegations of excessive spending and operational irregularities at Walesi. Minister Kamikamica noted that he has received various concerns and is prepared to report any findings to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption if necessary.
The inquiry aims to ascertain whether proper procedures were followed in the financial management of Walesi. This includes reviewing how funds were allocated, ensuring compliance with tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement activities dating back to the platform’s inception in 2015. In a previous parliamentary session, Kamikamica revealed that approximately $125 million was invested in establishing Walesi under the prior government.
The forthcoming report from the Auditor-General is expected to shed light on whether these expenditures were justifiable and managed effectively.
This situation represents an opportunity for transparency and accountability in governmental spending, as the findings may help restore public trust in the management of state resources and foster improvements in future governance practices. The emphasis on integrity and responsiveness to public concerns is a positive sign for the political landscape moving forward.
