The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is poised to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report regarding the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited this week. This announcement was made during a recent visit to Labasa, where the Minister addressed public concerns surrounding the state-owned digital television platform.
The investigation initiated last year focuses on allegations of excessive spending and operational irregularities concerning Walesi. Minister Kamikamica noted that he is aware of several concerns, and if necessary, he will refer any significant findings to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.
The inquiry was launched to assess whether proper procedures were followed in the financial management of the platform, emphasizing the allocation of funds, compliance with tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement activities since Walesi was established in 2015. Notably, the Minister revealed that about $125 million was expended on the establishment of Walesi under the previous government.
The auditor-general’s report is anticipated to shed light on whether these financial expenditures were justified and managed appropriately, providing an opportunity for transparency and accountability in public spending.
This investigation represents a proactive approach by the government to ensure transparency and integrity in public sector operations. Regardless of the findings, it reflects a commitment to addressing concerns and potentially improving oversight of state-owned entities. A positive outcome could enhance public confidence in government operations and foster a culture of accountability.
