The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is anticipated to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report regarding the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited this week. Mr. Kamikamica made this announcement during his visit to Labasa, where he addressed concerns surrounding the state-owned digital television platform.
The investigation, which began last year, focuses on allegations of excessive spending and operational irregularities related to Walesi. The minister acknowledged the concerns raised and emphasized the commitment to report any findings to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption if necessary.
Last year, Mr. Kamikamica ordered an inquiry to verify whether proper procedures were followed in managing the funds associated with the platform. This includes examining how funds were allocated, compliance with tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement activities since Walesi was established in 2015.
In a parliamentary update, the minister revealed that around $125 million was utilized to set up Walesi under the previous government. The auditor-general’s report is expected to shed light on whether these expenditures were justified and sufficiently managed.
The situation presents an opportunity for improvement and accountability in the management of public resources, fostering greater transparency for the citizens. As the report is anticipated, it could pave the way for necessary reforms in the governance of state-owned enterprises, reinforcing public trust in governmental operations.
This ongoing investigation highlights a positive step towards ensuring responsible financial management and governance, ultimately benefiting the public and the integrity of state institutions.
