The Wales men’s rugby team is set to make history as they prepare to face Fiji in the inaugural Nations Championship at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, July 4. This match will mark the first time that the Welsh men’s national side plays an international game at the home ground of Cardiff City Football Club.
As part of their summer campaign in World Rugby’s new biennial competition, Wales will also take on Argentina and South Africa in three away matches. The fixture details for the highly anticipated game against Fiji are expected to be finalized this week.
In a unique twist, Fiji will be hosting their Nations Championship home matches outside of their own country. This decision stems from the logistical challenges associated with travel to the Pacific Islands, as well as the desire to maximize revenue by playing in larger venues elsewhere. Fiji’s schedule includes a matchup against England in the second round before concluding the group stages against Scotland.
Meanwhile, the iconic Principality Stadium will be busy hosting various non-rugby events this summer, rendering it unavailable for games in late June and early July. While no official events have yet been confirmed for the stadium in July, it is worth noting that rock legends Metallica are scheduled to perform in Cardiff on June 28, just days after Take That graces the capital.
Looking ahead, Wales will have the opportunity to welcome Japan, New Zealand, and Australia to the Principality Stadium in November as part of the latter stages of the Nations Championship. This lineup promises to deliver thrilling rugby matches, and fans can look forward to an exciting series of international games in the upcoming months.
