The Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens tournament is gearing up for an exciting competition this year, set to introduce new initiatives that promise to enhance the sporting experience. The official launch of both the Fiji Bitter Yasawa Sevens and Wairiki Sevens tournaments took place at the Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd headquarters in Suva yesterday.
One of the most significant changes this year is the implementation of under-15 to under-18 categories, which excludes Netball and Volleyball, as part of a broader plan to nurture grassroots talent on the island. This focus on youth development is a positive step towards fostering the next generation of athletes in Fiji.
The tournament is expected to feature a competitive lineup, with 32 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams participating. Mark Spencer, General Manager of Paradise Beverages, highlighted the importance of their strong partnership that has lasted for 17 years, underscoring the vital role it plays in promoting local sports.
The Nacula Yasawa Sevens is scheduled for December 6-7 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, while the Wairiki Sevens will take place from December 11-14 at the Wairiki grounds in Taveuni.
This year’s tournaments not only celebrate the spirit of rugby but also aim to cultivate young talent, ensuring a bright future for the sport in Fiji. The community can look forward to a vibrant and inspiring showcase of local athleticism.
