The Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens tournament is gearing up to implement new initiatives for this year’s event. During a launch event held at the Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd headquarters in Suva, the Fiji Bitter Yasawa Sevens and Wairiki Sevens tournaments were officially announced.
This year’s Wairiki Sevens will feature a revised format that introduces categories from under-15 to under-18, excluding Netball and Volleyball. This change aims to enhance grassroots player development on the island, providing young athletes with a platform to showcase their talents.
The tournament anticipates participation from 32 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams, reflecting a strong interest in the competition. Mark Spencer, General Manager of Paradise Beverages, highlighted the significance of their 17-year partnership that continues to support these events.
The Nacula Yasawa 7s is scheduled for December 6-7 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, while the Wairiki 7s will take place from December 11-14 at the Wairiki grounds in Taveuni.
This initiative showcases a commitment to fostering local talent and strengthening community ties through sports. By involving younger age groups, the tournaments aim to build a sustainable future for rugby in the region and encourage the growth of the sport at all levels.
Overall, this year’s Wairiki Sevens promises to be a pivotal event for both participants and spectators, uniting communities and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
