The temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport on Labasa, Vanua Levu, is nearing completion and is set to begin operations ahead of schedule on January 13. Fiji Airports Chief Executive Mesake Nawari praised the work of contractors, Pacific Building Solutions, for their exemplary construction efforts.
Nawari emphasized the significance of Waiqele Airport as a crucial gateway for the Northern Division, which provides essential air connectivity for local residents, businesses, and tourists. The terminal project, initiated on October 16, 2024, was initially expected to conclude by January 17.
In addition to the temporary terminal, preparations for a permanent terminal will begin next week, with major construction activities slated to kick off in early February. Fiji Airports is committing $8 million to support this development, which encompasses all aspects of the project, including consultancy services and the construction contract.
Once completed, this terminal is anticipated to meet the growing demand for domestic travel among the people of Vanua Levu. Nawari highlighted that upgrading Waiqele Airport has been a long-term goal, integral to ongoing airport improvement plans dependent on available funding.
The airport is government-owned and managed by Fiji Airports, along with 13 other airports, while Nadi International Airport stands out as the only one that is both owned and managed by Fiji Airports and currently operates at a profit.
With planned modern amenities and operational enhancements, the new terminal will enhance air travel to the Northern Division. However, due to the ongoing construction, parking and terminal space will be restricted for the next 18 months. To alleviate congestion, access to the terminal will be limited to passengers and cargo consignors, and cooperation from travelers and their families is requested during this period.
This development represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure, promising better air travel options and improved services for the northern community. It reflects a dedication to progress and growth, which will benefit residents and visitors alike in the long run.
