The temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport in Labasa, Vanua Levu, is nearing completion and is set to begin operations ahead of schedule on January 13. Fiji Airports Chief Executive Mesake Nawari praised the work of Pacific Building Solutions for their impressive construction of the terminal. He emphasized that the airport serves as a vital link for the Northern Division, providing essential air connectivity for residents, businesses, and tourists alike.
Construction on the temporary terminal began on October 16, 2024, with an expected completion date of January 17. Following this, preliminary work for a permanent terminal will commence the following week, with major construction starting at the beginning of February. Fiji Airports is investing $8 million into the overall project, which covers everything from consultancy services to building contracts and utility installations.
Once completed, the new terminal will cater to the increasing domestic travel demands of Vanua Levu’s population. Nawari highlighted that the upgrade of Waiqele Airport has been a long time coming, part of an ongoing initiative to enhance airport facilities as funding allows.
Although Waiqele is a government-owned airport managed by Fiji Airports—similar to the 13 other airports in the region—Nadi International Airport remains the only airport that is both owned and operated by Fiji Airports and the sole profitable one at present. The new terminal is expected to bring modern amenities and improved operational efficiency, supporting the growth of air travel to the Northern Division.
However, due to ongoing construction, parking and terminal space will be limited for the next 18 months. Excited travelers and their families are requested to note the restrictions on terminal access, which will be limited to passengers and cargo consignors to help reduce congestion.
This development is encouraging as it not only enhances the travel experience for passengers but also signals progress in infrastructure improvements that are vital for connecting communities and fostering economic growth.
