The new temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport in Labasa, Vanua Levu, is set to open ahead of schedule on January 13. Fiji Airports Chief Executive, Mesake Nawari, praised the efforts of contractors Pacific Building Solutions for their excellent work on the project. This terminal is considered crucial as it provides vital air connectivity for the residents, businesses, and visitors of the Northern Division.
Construction for the temporary terminal began on October 16, 2024, and was initially expected to be completed by January 17. Moreover, plans for a permanent terminal will commence next week, with major construction activities slated to start in February.
Fiji Airports is investing $8 million in this development, which encompasses various project elements, including consultancy, construction, utilities, fixtures, and administrative operations. The new terminal is anticipated to address the increasing domestic travel demands for residents of Vanua Levu and upgrade the airport, a process that has been underway for decades, contingent on funding availability.
Waiqele Airport is government-owned and managed by Fiji Airports, which oversees a total of 13 airports in the country. Notably, Nadi International Airport is the only airport that is both owned and managed by Fiji Airports and currently operates profitably.
With modern amenities and enhanced operational efficiency, the new facility is expected to bolster air travel expansion in the Northern Division. However, travelers should be aware that parking and terminal space will be limited for the next 18 months due to ongoing construction, restricting terminal access to passengers and cargo consignees only. Nawari has emphasized the importance of understanding and cooperation from travelers and their farewell groups during this transformative period.
In summary, the initiative to open a new temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport represents a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure, promising greater convenience and safety for travelers. As the project unfolds, it highlights the commitment to improving air connectivity and enhancing the travel experience in the Northern Division, fostering economic growth and accessibility for all.
