The temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport on Labasa in Vanua Levu is nearing completion and is scheduled to open ahead of time on January 13. Fiji Airports Chief Executive Mesake Nawari praised the efforts of Pacific Building Solutions, the contractors behind the project, highlighting their excellence in constructing the facility.

The new terminal is vital for the Northern Division, offering essential air connectivity for local residents, businesses, and visitors. Nawari noted that the project aims to enhance the safety and convenience of travelers. Construction began on October 16, 2024, with an expected finalization date of January 17.

Following the establishment of the temporary terminal, preliminary work for a permanent terminal will commence next week, with substantial construction starting in early February. Fiji Airports plans to invest around $8 million into this development, covering various aspects such as consultancy, building contracts, utilities, and necessary fittings.

This project marks a significant step in upgrading Waiqele Airport, which has been a long-term effort. Currently, it operates as a government-owned airport, managed by Fiji Airports, which oversees a total of 13 airports across the region. Notably, Nadi International Airport is the only one owned and managed by Fiji Airports and remains the only profitable one at present.

The new terminal is designed with modern amenities aimed at accommodating the increasing domestic travel demand in Vanua Levu, promoting accessibility and growth in air travel to the Northern Division.

Travelers should be aware that due to ongoing construction, parking and terminal space limitations will be in effect for the next 18 months. Access will be restricted to passengers and cargo consignors to minimize congestion, and compliance from farewell groups and meet-and-greet parties is requested during this construction period.

In summary, the rapid progress at Waiqele Airport reflects a commitment to improving infrastructure that will ultimately benefit the local community and enhance travel experiences in the Northern Division. This development not only facilitates better connectivity but also signals a hopeful future for travel and tourism in the area.
