The newly inaugurated terminal at Waiqele Airport in Vanua Levu promises to enhance air connectivity and elevate travel experiences. This was underscored by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during a recent ground-breaking ceremony.
For over five decades, the old Adi Laisa Terminal has served as a crucial entry point to the Northern Division. However, the new terminal, set to replace the 1973-built facility, will be a modern structure spanning approximately 1,000 square meters. The construction is projected to finish within 18 months, reflecting the government’s commitment to infrastructure development.
Professor Prasad highlighted the dynamic economic growth observed in Labasa, fueled by significant investments from entities such as Extra Supermarket, Damodar North, Ramada Hotel, and expansions by Vinod Patel, RB Patel, and Carpenters. He also mentioned the government’s strategic initiatives in infrastructure, which include a major road project in collaboration with China and plans for a solar farm initiative with Food Processors Limited.
Describing the terminal as more than just a construction initiative, he stated, “It represents our commitment to enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure and connectivity for the benefit of every citizen.” He acknowledged the importance of Fiji Airports Ltd. in managing the country’s air transport, along with significant contributions from landowners, contractors, and private-sector partners.
The Acting Prime Minister reiterated the Coalition Government’s vision for a modernized, well-connected Fiji, emphasizing that the new terminal is a vital step toward this objective. This project is not only crucial for improving infrastructure but also for bolstering economic development and enhancing connectivity in the Northern Division, linking it with the rest of Fiji and beyond.
This development indicates a positive trajectory for Fiji’s infrastructure and economic landscape, fostering hope for continued growth and enhanced living standards for its citizens.
