Fiji Airports is set to begin operations at a newly built temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport in Labasa starting next Monday. This facility is a precursor to a significant $8 million airport development project scheduled to begin next month.
Fiji Airports’ CEO, Mesake Nawari, has emphasized that due to ongoing construction, both parking and terminal facilities will be limited for the next 18 months. To ease congestion, access to the terminal will be restricted to passengers and cargo consignors only. Nawari appreciates the understanding and cooperation of travelers, farewell groups, and those meeting arriving passengers during this transitional period.
Nawari highlighted that it has taken decades to reach this point of upgrading Waiqele Airport, and he noted that these improvements are part of broader efforts to enhance airport facilities across the country as funds become available. Waiqele Airport is government-owned and is managed by Fiji Airports, which oversees a total of 13 airports across Fiji. Notably, Nadi International Airport is the only airport that is both owned and managed by Fiji Airports and is currently the sole profitable facility in the network.
This endeavor not only represents an upgrade to the infrastructure but also reflects the commitment of the Fijian government to improve transportation facilities, which could boost tourism and local economies in the region.
In summary, the new temporary terminal at Waiqele Airport marks a significant step toward modernizing airport services in Fiji, leading to future benefits for both travelers and the local community.
