WAINIKELI Junior Secondary School on Taveuni is hosting a fundraising event this Saturday aimed at expanding its educational facilities to accommodate a growing number of students in the area. Currently, the school operates from a single block with just three classrooms—two for students and one serving as a staff room. The increasing interest from families in nearby villages, including Naselesele, Qeleni, and Bouma, indicates a notable demand for schooling at WAINIKELI.
Principal Eneriko Qalila commented on the surge in enrolment inquiries, revealing plans to admit 40 Year 9 students and 25 Year 10 students in the upcoming academic year. “There is a strong demand for more students to come to school here. The school is being brought to their doorsteps,” he stated, expressing excitement about the school’s future.
The school administration has set a goal to have dedicated classroom blocks in place for every year level up to Year 13 by 2029, demonstrating a proactive approach to meeting educational needs. Rather than relying solely on external support, Mr. Qalila emphasized their commitment to self-initiated fundraising efforts for constructing new classrooms.
This initiative reflects a broader movement among educational institutions in Fiji to enhance facilities and ensure safe, modern learning environments for students. Similar improvements are observed in schools like Valelawa Primary School, which is also undergoing changes to provide better conditions for its students, and institutions such as Jeremiah Raibevu College, which is looking to relocate and restructure due to increasing student numbers.
The ongoing commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure showcases a collective dedication to prioritizing student needs and fostering academic growth. With community support for initiatives like the WAINIKELI fundraising event, there is optimism that local schools can continue to evolve and provide enriching learning experiences for future generations.
