The Waikato Rapids showcased a dominant performance at the OFC Futsal Men’s Champions League, extending their winning streak with a convincing victory over the defending champions, AS PTT from Noumea, at Suva’s Vodafone Arena.
The match began with an impressive display of teamwork, as Maxwell Eriksen and Benjamin Bordin combined during a free kick to score the opening goal. Bordin’s strike set the tone for the Rapids as they took an early 1-0 lead. Despite AS PTT’s efforts to adapt their strategy on the court, the Rapids’ defense remained steadfast.
Goalkeeper Fazeel Aqil contributed significantly to the Rapids’ success, making crucial saves and launching a long throw that quickly found Casey Sharplin. Sharplin seized the opportunity to double the score, netting Waikato’s second goal. Shortly after, Eriksen added to the Rapids’ advantage, but AS PTT managed to pull one back with a goal from Jymael Upa just before halftime, leaving the score at 3-1.
In the second half, the Rapids continued to demonstrate their prowess. A well-executed set piece allowed Hemi Innes to slot home another goal, solidifying their control of the match. Sharplin further showcased his skill with dazzling dribbling that culminated in yet another goal, igniting cheers from the crowd and sealing AS PTT’s fate.
Despite a late consolation goal from Christ Pei as AS PTT attempted a flying keeper strategy, the match concluded with the Rapids triumphant at 5-2. This victory not only reinforces the Waikato Rapids’ strong form but also sends a warning to other teams in the tournament about their capabilities on the court.
