Leaving Waidina College in the highlands of Naitasiri, over 30 athletes embarked on a journey to the Capital City for the much-anticipated Triple N Zone athletics competition, which spans two days. The team’s departure took place at midday on Wednesday, with several athletes already present at their designated team tent at the Buckhurst Grounds when they were approached for comments.
The Waidina athletes are primarily competing in shot put events, alongside other track events. Luke Lesumaiositerelia, representing the team, shared insights on their preparation and experience as they traveled. “We came to Suva in a carrier, leaving the school around noon and arriving at our billeting place at Lomaiviti Hall after 3 PM,” he recalled.
The dedicated training spanned over a month and two weeks, which Lesumaiositerelia believes is now reflecting positive outcomes during the competition. “We are now seeing the results of such a preparation and training period taking shape,” he noted.
Despite geographical challenges typically faced by rural teams, the Waidina athletes cited changing weather conditions as their main hurdle, impacting some team members’ health. Nevertheless, they expressed appreciation for the support received from their teachers, who have played a crucial role in motivating them through these challenges.
The journey of the Waidina College athletes aligns with a broader narrative seen in other schools participating in the Triple N Zone athletics meet. For example, schools like Wainimala Secondary School and Bhawani Dayal Arya College have also highlighted their struggles and the strong community backing that aids their participation in these events.
As this competition serves as a precursor to the upcoming National Championship Coca-Cola Games later this month, the commitment and enthusiasm from athletes and their supporters contribute to a vibrant athletic culture in Fiji. The community’s support fosters an environment in which young talents can thrive, offering hope for a fruitful future in athletics across the region.
The positive spirit displayed by the Waidina team, mirrored by other schools, underscores the vital role athletics plays in personal development and community bonding.
