The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations is calling on all employers affected by the NMW (Amendment) Regulations 2022 and the ten specified sectors to update their wage records accordingly. This recommendation follows a wage increase of 50 cents that took effect on August 1 and is set to rise by another 50 cents on April 1, 2025, impacting both formal and informal sectors.
The ten sectoral industries included are Building, Civil and Electrical Engineering Trades, Hotel and Catering Trades, Manufacturing, Mining and Quarrying, Printing, Sawmilling and Logging, Security Services, Wholesale and Retail, Garment, and Road Transport.
Minister Agni Deo Singh stated that the Ministry’s Labour Standards and Compliance Team will remain proactive in inspecting workplaces across Fiji to ensure adherence to the new wage rates.
He emphasized that employers must post a written notice of the wage increases at their workplaces to inform employees appropriately.
Non-compliance with these regulations could result in a $100 penalty imposed by the Ministry’s Enforcement Officers. Additionally, employers who ignore the fixed penalty notice may face fines up to $10,000, a maximum of two years imprisonment, or both, while corporate entities could incur fines up to $50,000.
