The Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations is advising all employers under the NMW (Amendment) Regulations 2022 and the 10 sectoral industries to update their wage records accordingly. This notice follows an increase in the National Minimum Wage and the wages for 10 sectoral industries, which rose by 50 cents on August 1 and will see another increase of 50 cents on April 1, 2025, for both formal and informal sectors.
The ten sectoral industries affected include Building and Civil and Electrical Engineering Trades, Hotel and Catering Trades, Manufacturing, Mining and Quarrying, Printing, Sawmilling and Logging, Security Services, Wholesale and Retail, Garment, and Road Transport.
Minister Agni Deo Singh stated that the Labour Standards and Compliance Team will carry out inspections across Fiji to ensure proper implementation of the wage increases, making certain that all workers receive the correct wage rates.
Employers are mandated to display written notices of the new wage rates in their workplaces to inform employees of the changes. Those who fail to do so may face a penalty of $100 from the Ministry’s Enforcement Officers. Additionally, non-compliance with a fixed penalty notice may result in a fine of up to $10,000 or a prison term of up to two years, or both. Corporate entities could face fines of up to $50,000.
