The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations is reminding employers affected by the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Regulations 2022 and the ten designated sectors to update their wage records accordingly.
This follows an initial increase of 50 cents in the National Minimum Wage and wage rates across the ten sectors, effective from August 1. Another wage rise of 50 cents is scheduled for April 1, 2025, which applies to both formal and informal sectors.
The ten specified sectors include Building and Civil and Electrical Engineering Trades, Hotel and Catering Trades, Manufacturing, Mining and Quarrying, Printing, Sawmilling and Logging, Security Services, Wholesale and Retail, Garment, and Road Transport.
Minister Agni Deo Singh stated that the Ministry’s Labour Standards and Compliance Team will carry out inspections to ensure that the first phase of wage increases is properly implemented in workplaces across Fiji, guaranteeing that all workers receive the correct wage.
“Employers must display a written notice of the updated wage rates in their workplaces to inform employees of the changes,” he emphasized.
Employers who do not display these regulations face a penalty of $100 issued by the Ministry’s Enforcement Officers. If an employer neglects to comply with the fixed penalty notice, they could face a maximum fine of $10,000 or a prison term of up to two years, or both. Corporations could incur a fine of up to $50,000.
