The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is facing criticism over the quality and timely submission of its financial reports, prompting concerns during a recent presentation to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. Committee Chair Esrom Immanuel highlighted that both the quality and timeliness of the reports have deteriorated, with significant gaps in information noted.

Acting Chief Executive Seru Soderberg acknowledged these issues, stating that WAF is actively taking measures to improve its processes. This includes imposing stricter deadlines, updating technological systems for better reporting accuracy, and providing internal training for staff to enhance their understanding of financial reporting standards. WAF is also collaborating closely with both the Auditor General and the Finance Ministry to ensure compliance and streamline the auditing process.

These challenges at WAF are underscored by broader issues within the organization, including previously reported problems relating to corruption and fraud. These past issues were addressed with enhanced fraud risk management strategies and a renewed commitment to transparency.

WAF is confident that with the changes being implemented, along with governmental support aimed at infrastructural improvements, there will be a more efficient and accountable service in the near future. Continued investment in infrastructure has been identified as crucial for the authority to provide sustainable water services to the population, helping to regain community trust and ensuring a reliable water supply moving forward.

While facing hurdles, the proactive steps being taken demonstrate a commitment to overcoming these obstacles, contributing to a more reliable and effective Water Authority of Fiji.
