The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is preparing to appoint a new chief executive officer as Dr. Amit Chanan has announced his decision not to renew his contract, which will conclude in March 2025. Dr. Chanan has communicated to the WAF Board his intention to seek new opportunities following the end of his three-year tenure.

Under Dr. Chanan’s leadership, WAF has marked significant achievements, including the successful completion of the Viria Water Treatment Plant, one of the largest water infrastructure projects in the South Pacific. Additionally, he has been pivotal in the development of the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, an ambitious plan that proposes an $8.5 billion investment to ensure sustainable and resilient water and sanitation services for all Fijians over the next three decades.

WAF Chairman Ratu Savenaca Seniloli recognized Dr. Chanan’s contributions and expressed the board’s respect for his decision to pursue new challenges. He noted that leadership changes can create opportunities for innovation and fresh ideas, implying that the incoming leadership may further enhance the water services in Fiji.

The foundation laid by Dr. Chanan, combined with the strategic vision established in the Water Sector 2050 Strategy, positions WAF for continued growth in addressing future water and sanitation challenges. The transition is seen as an optimistic step for the authority, heralding a future of enhanced services and infrastructure for the benefit of Fiji’s communities.

This leadership shift, while a notable change, also fosters hope for the continued evolution and improvement of Fiji’s water services, ensuring that the needs of the population are met for years to come.
