Fiji-born Suliasi Vunivalu, renowned for his dynamic play as a Wallabies winger and a former rugby league star, has officially signed with French Top 14 club La Rochelle. The 28-year-old first transitioned to rugby union in 2021, moving from the Melbourne Storm to the Queensland Reds, where he quickly garnered attention and was called up to represent Australia.

Vunivalu was part of the Wallabies’ 2023 World Cup squad but primarily played off the bench, finishing his stint with seven Test appearances. However, he hasn’t been selected by the new Australian coach, Joe Schmidt, since taking over earlier this year, prompting his move to France.

In his own words, Vunivalu expressed his enthusiasm for this new journey, stating that he has enjoyed the transition from rugby league to rugby union and sees this as an opportunity for growth. “This is a good opportunity because travelling with rugby has been one of my goals from the start. It’s the right time,” he shared.

He will join fellow World Cup teammate Will Skelton at La Rochelle, a club that has recently celebrated significant success, winning back-to-back European Rugby Champions Cups in 2022 and 2023. Vunivalu, who has a strong record with 18 tries in 40 games for the Reds, is expected to make a substantial impact at La Rochelle, which also hosts several other Fijian players.

While Vunivalu faces tough competition following the rise of young winger Tim Ryan at the Reds, this new chapter signifies a fresh start on an international stage, showcasing his commitment to advancing his rugby career. Fans of Vunivalu and rugby enthusiasts alike can look forward to witnessing his continued journey in France, aiming to excel in one of the sport’s top leagues.

This move not only highlights Vunivalu’s talent but also the growing influence of Fijian players in premier rugby competitions worldwide—a testament to the country’s rich rugby heritage and its players’ capabilities on the global stage.
